Inversion Table Buyer's Guide

More people these days are buying inversion tables as a means to handle back pain. Inversion tables use gravity and your own body weight to decompress the spine, relieve pressure on nerves, and realign the spine. Whether you need it for a nice stretch after a workout or want to use it to manage chronic back pain, inversion tables are a great tool to have around your house.

There are a lot of inversion tables out there, which can make your choice hard. Before buying an inversion table, make sure to consider the following important features.

FDA Approval

The very first thing you should look for is whether your desired inversion table is FDA-approved. Inversion tables are supposed to be therapeutic devices so you want to make sure an independent third-party organization can vouch for its benefits. FDA-approved inversion tables are not only vetted for high quality, but some FDA-approved medical inversion tables might be covered by insurance.

If you can’t find a good inversion table that is FDA-approved, then the next best option is to find one that has been verified by another independent third party. For example, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a third-party company that verifies inversion table products. UL tests products for important safety features and puts tables through a 30,000 use simulated cycle at the maximum user weight. Only products that have been UL-verified can feature the UL-Certified mark directly on the product itself.

Table Material

The only kind of inversion table you should buy is one made from high-quality carbon steel. A lot of “cheap” inversion tables are made from plastic or low-quality metals. These kinds of inversion tables can be ineffectual and even dangerous. Carbon steel is basically the only material that can support high weights while still remaining rigid and supportive. Carbon steel will rust over time, so you need to keep your inversion table moisture-free.

Safety Features

Given that inversion tables flip you headfirst over the ground, you want to make sure yours has all the important safety features which include:

  • Ankle locks – Ankle locks keep your feet in place and keep you from falling out of the table when flipped. Make sure the ankle locks fit snuggly.
  • Vinyl covers – Your inversion table should cover the moving parts so you don’t accidentally get a finger or hand caught while inverting.
  • High friction feet – Rubber or silicone feet keep the table stable and firm on the floor so it doesn’t shift while in operation.
  • Locking bar – A locking bar keeps the table inverted. That way you don’t have to hold yourself in that position.

Available Space

Inversion tables are pretty large and take up a lot of space. Make sure the inversion table you want will actually fit where you want to put it. You may have trouble putting your inversion table in a room with a low ceiling, so make sure the size is within the proper range. A lot of inversion tables are static and stationary but some can be folded up and stored when not in use.

Inversion Method

Most economy-class inversion tables are inverted by hand by the user. Premium models may come with an electric motor that inverts for you. Just flick the switch and the motor flips the table itself. Motor tables are nice, but they are more expensive and the motor may require routine maintenance.

Adjustability

You probably won’t want your inversion table to only flip you a complete 180-degrees. Consider looking for an inversion table that has adjustable levels of inversion. Inversion tables with adjustable inversion allow you to lock the table at various rotations. You can even start at something as small as 30 degrees.

By the same token, make sure the foot platform and ankle locks are adjustable too. If multiple people of different heights are going to use the table, then you’ll want to be able to change the height of the ankle locks.

Price

You shouldn’t buy an inversion table that costs less than $180. Most high-quality inversion tables fall within the $200-$450 range, and anything less than that could be dangerous. Cheap inversion tables are often made with weak materials and are poorly constructed. The last thing you want is your inversion table to fail and drop you on your head. Again, avoid cheap materials like plastic and composites and settle only for carbon steel.

Warranty

If you pick a high-quality inversion table, you likely will never have to worry about it failing within its rated lifespan. However, no product is perfect and sometimes mistakes get made in manufacturing. Make sure the table you buy has a good warranty policy so you can get reimbursed in case something is less than perfect.
