Method:

Most oximeters take their measurements by sliding over the top of the fingertip. It’s a painless, non-invasive way to collect information and everyone can tolerate it, even small children.

Result Time:

No matter which oximeter you buy, it should deliver your results quickly. Some offer instant results while others may take up to 10 seconds. Occasionally, you’ll see an oximeter that takes up to 60 seconds to deliver results. That may not be ideal if you’re trying to see the differences in your heart rate numbers when moving from the sitting to the standing position.

Accuracy:

If you’re counting on an oximeter to help you spot any alarming numbers for your oxygen level and heart rate, you’ll want it to be as accurate as possible. An inaccurate reading could unnecessarily send you to a doctor’s office. A good bet is finding an oximeter that is accurate within two to four percent of your true readings. Most of them will state their accuracy level.

Display:

You’ll want your oximeter to have a display screen that is capable of lighting up so you can see the numbers in the dark. That way, you can use it to take your resting heart rate or oxygen level while in bed or use it on an asthmatic child at night without waking them. You also may want the screen to show larger numbers if you have vision issues.

Statistics Included:

Oximeters will measure your oxygen level, but they can do more than that. Most also measure your heart rate, making an oximeter a handy and inexpensive tool to keep in your home.
